Pour Jean-Marie Guéhenno, la mondialisation marque le triomphe durable de l'Amérique. Le processus de globalisation est en fait une « américanisation du monde », c'est-à-dire une extension à l'échelle de la planète du « rêve américain ». Or, autant les Américains apprécient la mondialisation, autant celle-ci est rejetée par toutes les sociétés où la mémoire, plutôt que le contrat, est le fondement de l'identité et de la cohésion sociale. Les États-Unis ont donc de plus en plus de difficultés à faire passer leurs vues, d'autant que leur politique étrangère apparaît fragmentée. Selon l'auteur toutefois, les Européens, dans la mesure où ils s'efforcent de « réconcilier le contrat avec la mémoire », ont un rôle particulier à jouer aux côtés des Américains si l'on veut que la mondialisation n'aboutisse pas à des crispations identitaires et à la formation d'un monde divisé. American power is founded primarily on a model of civilization, which prompts a comparison between Americanization and globalization : the latter is not felt to be a threat by the Americans who, on the contrary, consider it an extension on a global scale of the best of their political experience. This perception is shared by a significant section of the elites in developing countries, for whom it mingles with an "American model" of individual economic success. But this Americanization/globalization is also a severe shock to historical, memory-based communities and it is fragmenting societies, making the work of political - including American - leaders more difficult. The Europeans, who are close to the Americans but more sensitive to the importance of memory-based communities, have a decisive role to play alongside the United States if globalization is to be enshrined in institutions that will give it legitimacy.
