RESUMO:
The number of children who have overweight or obesity has steadily increased in recent years. Currently, in Europe one out of three 11-year old children is overweight or obese.7 Furthermore, over 60% of children who have overweight before puberty will have overweight in early adulthood.8 The rise in overweight and obesity among children is alarming, particularly as obesity is highly associated with detrimental health and psychosocial outcomes in childhood, as well as in later life.9 The lifestyle of the average European has changed dramatically over recent decades and is thought to be responsible for the increases in overweight and obesity seen across age groups.10 Many factors contribute to this lifestyle change. One of the factors is eating patterns: children in European countries now consume more fast-food and sugar-sweetened beverages, eat outside the home more frequently and spend less time eating family meals than previous generations. In addition, prepared and processed foods are more accessible than ever before and available in larger portion sizes. [Da introd.]
