Over the past three decades, the European Union has constantly improved its framework to fight money laundering and terrorist financing. The focus of EU action hasbeen on prevention, as well as the investigation and prosecution of such harmful practices. Despite these constant improvements, the existing framework still suffers fromsome shortcomings, e.g. uneven national transposition of the Anti-money-laundering Directive. At the same time, while not replacing national supervision, there is also a need for better supervision at EU level of sectors prone to money laundering activities. Finally, the investigative and prosecuting aspectcould benefit from better coordination of national Financial Intelligence Units. In 2020, the European Commission therefore presented an action plan for a new single EU Anti money-laundering system, outlining areas for future proposals that the European Commission will present as a package in spring 2021.
