The representation of women in the judicial branch : eighteen latin american high courts in comparative perspective / Santiago Basabe Serrano

This article explores the representation of women in the high courrs of eighteen Latin American countries. Using an unpuhlished database, we find that, as in the legislatures and ministerial cabinets, the number of women in high courts is small. The arride also demonstrates that aithough chere is little difference in judge.s’ ages or post graduate studies, men reach the high court leveis more easily. Additionally, empirical evidence shows rhat, ar the time of their appointmenr, the percentage of women with prior judicial experience ir usually grearer rhan for meo. These results show thar rhe greater presence of male judges is related not to academic merir or previous judicial experience but rather to a srtuctural process of exciusion of women from political decision-making fields. In this regard, the artcle also finds thar rhe few posirions assigned to female judges are not in arcas of great political significance, much less in the presidency of the high courts. [Do autor]
