Chinese telecommunications titan Huawei has been suffering from the kind of publicity no company would ever welcome. In short order, Australia, New Zealand and Japan have all banned Huawei from taking part in the development of 5G networks owing to security concerns. [§] The United Kingdom's British Telecom (BT), which has been using Huawei equipment in its core networks for the past decade, has announced that it will not use Huawei equipment in its 5G networks, and is stripping Huawei equipment out of its 3G and 4G networks. In December, the heads of the British, Canadian and other allied intelligence services expressed concerns about security threats posed by Chinese technology. [§] These developments suggest that the United States has been whipping its key allies into line. [§] Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Digital Single Market Andrus Ansip stated that the EU should be worried about the threat posed by Huawei and other Chinese technology companies to the bloc's industry and security...[Da introd.]
