Assertive China : irredentism or expansionism? / Denny Roy

Beijing's South China Sea policy reveals much about how China will behave as a regional great power, but many observers are not seeing this because of a largely successful Chinese obfuscation campaign. There are two plausible explanations for assertive Chinese behaviour in this strategically and economically important waterway. One explanation, irredentism, suggests China's larger objectives are relatively benign. Not surprisingly, this is the explanation put forward by the Chinese government – and accepted by many outside analysts. An alternative and more plausible explanation, however, is expansionism, which raises deep concerns about the future of China's neighbours. Assuming that Chinese assertiveness will be confined to irredentist aims risks leaving the other states of the Indo-and Asia-Pacific unprepared for Chinese challenges beyond existing disputed territories...[Da introd.]
